Among the greatest of all services is the education of children, and promotion of the various sciences, crafts and arts.
Developing the moral capacities in our children is of fundamental importance, not only to their own future happiness, but to the service and advancement of our entire society. Parents everywhere are looking for ways to give children this spiritual education, to lay the foundations for their children to have noble characters and fruitful lives.
Spiritual and Moral Education
Providing spiritual education for children has long been an element of the culture of the Bahá’í community. In neighbourhoods across the United States, Bahá’ís and their friends offer moral education classes that nurture the hearts and minds of children, complementing the education they receive at school.
Open to All
These classes are open to children of all backgrounds and are often run in collaboration with their families. Drawing on the teachings of the Bahá’í Faith, the classes aim to inspire in children a love for God and the Founders of all the great religions in the world. The classes, both by studying sacred verses and talking through the questions that children face in their lives, help children apply spiritual principles – such as love, unity and justice – to their own lives, to their families and their friends. All children are welcome to these classes, and no child participates without the approval of his or her parents. These classes include short lessons, activities to build social skills and friendships, games, stories that illustrate virtues like love, kindness, generosity, and art and music.
Marie Agunga is hosting Virtual Children’s Classes on Sundays at 1:00 p.m. If you are interested in having your children join in, please contact her by email (firstname.lastname@example.org). She will send you the zoom link as well as a reminder!
Brilliant Star: A Baha’i Magazine for Children
Published six times per year by the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is of the United States, Brilliant Star Magazine invites children of all faiths to explore the teachings of Baha’u’llah, the Prophet-Founder of the Baha’i Faith. Baha’u’llah taught that humanity is one family and that all religions come from one God. “Ye are the fruits of one tree, and the leaves of one branch,” Baha’u’llah wrote. “Deal ye one with another with the utmost love and harmony, with friendliness and fellowship.” Designed for children ages 8-12, years of important moral and emotional development, Brilliant Star offers an introduction to Baha’i history and principles through engaging fiction, non-fiction, activities, music, interviews, puzzles, cartoons, colorful illustrations and games. Universal values of good character, such as kindness, courage, creativity, and helpfulness, are incorporated into the magazine. Young readers can learn from the adventures of likeable fictional characters as well as from outstanding real-life role models from various backgrounds. They are challenged to develop a world-embracing vision and to be of service to their families and communities. Social and spiritual issues that children may find troubling are addressed from a Baha’i perspective, with appreciation and respect for readers of diverse races, cultures and faiths.
